Harold T. Jenkins

Harold Thurman Jenkins died at Hospice of Savannah on September 25, 2006. Harold was born the son of Arthur and Florie Taylor Jenkins in Hiltonia, Georgia on April 9, 1920. His family moved to Savannah shortly thereafter. Harold attended school in Savannah and then, eagerly joined the United States Marine Corps. on February 19, 1939. Harold was a member of G Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division for seven years. He served in the Pacific and was in the first amphibious assault in World War II in the Solomon Islands on Tulagi and Guadalcanal. While on Guadalcanal he fought at the "Battle of Bloody Ridge," one of the fiercest battles of the campaign. In addition, he served on the islands of New Britain, Pavuvu and Saipan. He was honorably discharged in 1945. When he returned to Savannah, he married the love of his life, Yvonne DeNitto in 1946. Together, they had two daughters, Joanne Marie Jenkins and Jeanne Yvonne Jenkins Bandy. Harold was a switchman on the Seaboard Coastline Railroad for 34 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the American Legion and the Savannah Italian Club. He was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church. Harold had numerous hobbies and pursuits. He enjoyed visiting with friends at the McDonald's on DeRenne Avenue. He was an avid and excellent golfer and a voracious reader, especially fascinated with the history of ancient Rome and the artwork of Michelangelo. He and his wife, Yvonne, traveled to Europe on several occasions and took a scenic 3 month tour of the United States in 1986. Harold loved and was much loved by his entire and extended family and friends. He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Yvonne DeNitto, his two daughters and their husbands, Joseph Dahm and Martin Bandy. He also leaves behind three grandchildren, Mark Bandy, Michael Bandy and Marie Bandy Wall along with her husband, Mike Wall and their children, his great-grandchildren, Sophia and Camille Wall. He also leaves behind his sister Mary Helen Driggers, her husband Coy Driggers, and their children, Eric, Phyllis, Barry, Terry, and Kirk. He is also survived by the families of his pre-deceased brothers, Irby Jenkins, Sr. and Cecil Jenkins, including Viola Jenkins, Irby and Carolyn Jenkins, Diane Jenkins, Darlene Jenkins, Joy Jenkins, and Cecilia Jenkins Taylor. Harold will always be affectionately remembered as "Fodd." Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on September 27, 2006 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors Hodgson Chapel with a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. James Catholic Church on September 28, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. Entombment to follow at Hillcrest Abbey Mausoleum.
